Dysautonomia is a wide term to describe many disorders and diagnoses related to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS governs many automatic processes in the body like controlling heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion. For this reason, its dysfunction can cause many possible symptoms like headaches, fatigue, lightheadedness, nausea, and anxiety. The most common and popular disease is Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) that causes one’s heart rate to rise greatly from laying down to standing. Causes of dysautonomia can be concussions, viral infections, or other chronic infections leading to physiological stress. Then, there are other risk factors that are commonly associated with dysautonomia. The term ‘choking’ is used to describe athletes who do not perform to normal standards when they are under pressure to perform well. The pressure causes anxiety, which results in the conscious mind trying to control the motor movement in athletics. Athletes train for months or years for competition, so they have a form of automation in their specific skills. When anxiety builds and the mind tries to micromanage the task, it leads to poor performance. There are simple ways that athletes can turn off the conscious control to better perform under pressure. These include things like breathing and fist holds. Check out the video for more in depth information on how to enhance athletic performance under pressure! - [Is Grip Strength a Predictor of Long-Term Brain Health?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/is-grip-strength-a-predictor-of-long-term-brain-health/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the benefits of training grip strength for long-term brain health. Grip strength has been correlated with many health outcomes including all-cause and disease-specific mortality. Increased grip strength is associated with better bone mineral density, fewer falls and fractures, less depression and cognitive impairment, and improved quality of life. Because grip strength is usually similar to overall muscle strength, this becomes a good predictor for brain health. The brain also uses a lot of its real estate to control the hands for both precision and strength; therefore, appropriate grip strength shows proper brain function. A recent study even showed that higher grip strength correlated with more gray matter volume in the brain with improved mental health. A stroke is characterized by diminished blood flow to a part of the brain either due to blockage of an artery (ischemic) or breakage and blood leaking (hemorrhagic). The lack of blood flow results in an absence of oxygen and nutrients for the cells needing to maintain energy. This causes neuronal dysfunction that is often seen as face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulties. The standard treatment for acute care includes blood thinners and anticoagulants and possibly surgery for other complications. Exercise is not a typical addition to acute strokes, but eye movement training may be beneficial to hasten recovery if started early. The vagus nerve is the main player involved in the parasympathetic (‘rest and digest’) nervous system. It starts at the bottom of the brainstem and connects to the throat, voice box, ear, heart and lungs, and the majority of the organs in the abdomen. Most of the nerve is sensory, which means that the brain receives information pertaining to the status of many organs via the vagus nerve. This allows the brain to properly control these organs. In addition, the vagus nerve is involved in anti-inflammatory pathways; therefore, vagus nerve stimulation can decrease inflammation that is involved in many conditions. Check out the video for more in depth information on who can benefit from vagus nerve stimulation and how to do it! - [Training the Female Athlete](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/training-the-female-athlete/): - [What is the Best Approach for Treating Long COVID?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/what-is-the-best-approach-for-treating-long-covid/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the mechanisms and possible treatment options for Long-COVID. Long-COVID has affected many people since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many are looking for answers. It is a multi-organ system disorder, which makes it very difficult to treat. Each individual may have different mechanisms contributing to the disorder that is causing one’s symptoms. It is important to identify which mechanisms causing the problems by having proper blood work addressing co-infections, autoimmunity, and blood clotting, gastrointestinal tests, and autonomic nervous system testing. Only then can a proper treatment plan be produced to help the individual. Mild HBOT uses a less percentage of oxygen than medical grade HBOT along with a slightly decreased pressure. It is designed to increase oxygen molecules that become dissolved in the plasma of the blood to get more oxygen to the body’s tissues. The more oxygen (within reason) that gets to the dysfunctional cells, the better the cells can fight off infections, repair damaged area, and function more efficiently. For this reason, there has been evidence that mild HBOT can improve conditions like metabolic syndrome, hypertension, type II diabetes, and Parkinson's disease. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a collection of symptoms related to the gut and brain like abdominal bloating and pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, food sensitivities, and anxiety. Over recent years, IBS has gained more popularity in how it is a gut-brain axis disorder. The article discussed today proposes that IBS results as a problem with defeating gravity. Gravity is the first sense that we all feel out of our mother’s womb; therefore, every other sense develops off this foundation. We develop strategies to sense gravity in our peripheral nervous system sensors, integrate those senses in our brain, and then defeat gravity through proper movement. If any or multiple areas are not working properly, it could lead to symptoms of IBS. Check out the video for more in depth information on how gravity relates to proper gut function and stability! - [Should We Eliminate Livestock Production?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/should-we-eliminate-livestock-production/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the problems with limiting or eliminating livestock production. Many in the plant-based community talk about why eating meat is bad for human health and the environment, but there is often a lack of evidence for both. Only association studies correlate meat eating to poor health outcomes, but other variables like smoking, exercise, and eating ultra processed foods are not considered. Saturated fat and cholesterol has been demonized for many years based on misinterpreted and poorly-reported research along with a misunderstanding of human physiology. Rather, animal products contain more nutrients and less anti-nutrients than plant foods, which will help prevent insufficiencies in the body. At the same time, conventional farming practices may increase greenhouse gasses, but not to the level of transportation or electricity. Also, regenerative grazing can actually help remove greenhouse gasses from the air and put carbon back into the soil to save the environment. Check out the video for more in depth information on how raising and eating livestock is not the problem but the solution! - [Can CoEnzyme Q10 Help Prevent Cognitive Decline?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/can-coenzyme-q10-help-prevent-cognitive-decline/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about how supplementation with CoEnzyme Q10 can help prevent cognitive decline. Cognitive decline during aging can be due to many factors, but most involve problems with the mitochondria of cells. Mitochondria are the energy producers in the cell, but they have many other functions important for cell survival and efficiency. CoEnzyme Q10 is part of the electron transport chain that helps the mitochondria produce energy, but it also is an antioxidant that prevents molecular damage from free radicals. Because the brain uses a lot of energy, it needs well functioning mitochondria. If it doesn’t, free radicals can increase leading to cellular damage and inflammation. Because our mitochondria become less efficient as we age, supplementation with CoQ10 or Ubiquinol can help mitigate damage. Check out the video for more in depth information on the CoEnzyme Q10 and brain health! - [How Does the Microbiome Affect a Brain Injury?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/how-does-the-microbiome-affect-a-brain-injury/): - [Should I be Taking a Multivitamin for Cognitive Health?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/should-i-be-taking-a-multivitamin-for-cognitive-health/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the reasons most people should be taking a multivitamin, especially for cognitive health. Ideally, everyone is able to get their nutrients from the food they eat; however, the foods we eat are not like they were many years ago. Today, our soils are not as good making our foods less nutrient-dense, especially vegetables and fruits. At the same time, our lives are filled with stress, chemicals, and toxins in which our bodies need to defend. Hence, taking a multivitamin-mineral supplement can help ensure that we are getting adequate nutrients, in the correct ratios, for optimal health. The video shares a paper that looked at how older adults can improve global cognition and memory by taking a multivitamin over a 3 year period. This is amazing since most people assume that cognition only decreases as we get older. Check out the video for more in depth information on the benefits of taking a multivitamin for cognitive health! - [Does Physical Activity Help Prevent Severe COVID-19 Outcomes?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/does-physical-activity-help-prevent-severe-covid-19-outcomes/): Sallis R, Young DR, Tartof SY, et al. Nutrient density can be described in multiple ways, but the article discussed looked specifically at micronutrients that are commonly deficient in low- and middle-income groups across the globe. These micronutrients are iron, zinc, vitamin A, calcium, folate, and vitamin B12. They all play specific roles in the body, and deficiencies in each can provoke many symptoms and even result in severe diseases. For this reason, it is important to prioritize these nutrient dense foods into our lives to ensure adequate physical, mental, and emotional health. Check out the video for more in depth information on which foods supply the most of these nutrients and why they are important! - [When Should You Start Therapy Following a Concussion?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/when-should-you-start-therapy-following-a-concussion-2/): - [What is the Importance of the Cerebellum in Brain Rehab?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/what-is-the-importance-of-the-cerebellum-in-brain-rehab/): - [Can Spinal Cord Stimulation Improve Walking in Multiple Sclerosis Patients?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/can-spinal-cord-stimulation-improve-walking-in-multiple-sclerosis-patients/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about how walking can be improved in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the long fiber tracts connecting areas in the brain and spinal cord. This leads to poor motor control, spasticity or increased muscle tone, postural instability, and difficulty walking, among many other possible symptoms. The article discussed shows how non-invasive, transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation can improve the above symptoms in MS patients. This improvement lasts for about 2 hours, but then returns to baseline 24 hours later. This shows the need for repetition to gain neuroplasticity and long-lasting effects. Check out the video for more in depth information on how spinal cord stimulation can improve walking in MS patients! - [Is Exercise Medicine Following an Acute Concussion?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/is-exercise-medicine-following-an-aute-concussion/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the importance of aerobic exercise following an acute concussion. Most common recommendations following a concussion are rest with no physical or mental activity and possibly in a dark room. This recommendation is outdated as we have more research and guidance that rest does not help acute concussions heal. The best advice following acute concussions is to be active. Ideally, this means walking or biking to increase one’s heart rate but not past the limit of increased symptoms or exacerbations of symptoms after the activity. Two research articles are discussed today that show the benefits of aerobic exercise following concussions. One discusses that the earlier time aerobic exercise is initiated, the earlier time to return to sport and school/work. The other discusses the benefits of testing for aerobic exercise threshold prior to initiating submaximal aerobic exercise for treatment. Check out the video for more in depth information on how exercise is medicine following a concussion! - [Can Physical Exercise Decrease Neuroinflammation?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/can-physical-exercise-decrease-neuroinflammation/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about another amazing benefit of physical exercise for brain health. Chronic neuroinflammation is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases, but can also be present in post-concussion problems. Accompanying neuroinflammation is uncontrolled microglial cell activation, which are important cells in the brain. Under normal conditions, the microglia will help improve neuroplasticity and remove waste; however, when inflamed, the microglia contribute to the damage by promoting more inflammation and cellular death. Physical exercise has been shown to decrease neuroinflammation and microglial activation in a variety of ways in both pre-clinical models and humans. Check out the video for more in depth information on the ways that physical exercise can decrease inflammation! - [What Does the Gut Have to do with Restless Leg Syndrome?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/what-does-the-gut-have-to-do-with-restless-leg-syndrome/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the relationship between the gut and restless leg syndrome. Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder causing unpleasant sensations in the legs that are worse with inactivity and generally affect sleep. Many people with RLS are also predisposed to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and vice versa. IBS is a gastrointestinal disorder resulting in abdominal pain and constipation/diarrhea, and there are likely causes that are not recognized medically. The brain and gut are highly connected, so these bidirectional associations are not surprising. The study shares hypotheses for this association like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), pain processing changes, iron and vitamin D deficiencies. Check out the video for more in depth information on the possible causes of restless leg syndrome! - [Why Shouldn’t You Pull All-Nighters to Study for a Test?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/why-shouldnt-you-pull-all-nighters-to-study-for-a-test/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the importance of sleep for memory consolidation. Many high school and college students will stay up all night, or pull all-nighters, to study for an exam, but they are actually doing more harm than good. Sleep deprivation and chronic sleep restriction causes increased permeability in the blood brain barrier (BBB). The BBB regulates which molecules can enter the brain tissue from the blood. When it is damaged, it can cause inflammation and decreased functioning of brain areas, especially the hippocampus, which is essential to memory consolidation. For this reason, quality sleep after studying is essential for converting short-term into long-term memory, and hence, better success on current and future tests. Check out the video for more in depth information on the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation! - [Mother’s Journey Supporting PANDAS](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/mothers-journey-supporting-pandas/): Andrea is a mom of two, with a background in pediatric nursing working in acute care pediatrics. The vestibular system is the most basic sense that every other sense—like vision, auditory, touch—all build from. It is the foundation for the rest of the senses and feelings including emotions. Receptors in the inner ear connect to the brainstem to give basic balance and equilibrium. From the brainstem, the vestibular connections are vast to multiple areas in the brain including the higher centers for cognition and emotions. This includes connection to the limbic system, which function involves emotions and memory. For this reason, vestibular stimulation has been shown to improve multiple aspects of mood including those with depression, anxiety, aggression, and mania. Light sensitivity (photosensitivity) and eye pain from light (photophobia) are very common symptoms following concussion or traumatic brain injury. This can result in decreased quality of life and failure to work. Although many concussion patients have photosensitivity, up to 85% receive relief of their symptoms by using colored glasses. This allows them to continue with school or work along with normal life functions. The colored glasses enhance one spectrum of visible light while diminishing the others. This overall decreases the intensity of light and processing needed by the brain, and hence decreases symptoms. Check out the video for more in depth information on colored glasses and how they are used following traumatic brain injury and other neurological disorders! - [Why Do We Want to Activate the Cerebellum?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/why-do-we-want-to-activate-the-cerebellum/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the cerebellum and how we use it during treatment. The cerebellum is termed the ‘little brain’ because it is much small than the cerebral cortex (big brain) and sits just underneath. The cerebellum has more neurons than the rest of the brain combined! It is the conductor as it coordinates voluntary movements, thoughts, and emotions. Because the cerebellum is involved in so many processes, it talks to many other areas of the brain. We can activate the cerebellum in multiple ways to stimulate other areas that need blood flow and healing. Check out the video for more in depth information on how the cerebellum is used in treatment! - [Can Long COVID be Due to Persistent Brainstem Dysfunction?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/can-long-covid-be-due-to-persistent-brainstem-dysfunction/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the hypothesis that long-COVID involves persistent brainstem dysfunction. There are many possible reasons for prolonged symptoms following an acute infection of SARS-CoV-2. These include a persistent viral infection, autoimmunity, blood coagulation, excessive inflammation in the brain or body, and brain abnormalities. More specifically, the brainstem is the small area deep in the brain that contains a variety of different functioning brain cells. Many of its functions deal with automatic control of the body like heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Brainstem dysfunction parallels long-COVID when looking at the symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, headaches, gut problems, and exercise intolerance; therefore, it is possible that the virus caused inflammation and damage to the brainstem. Check out the video for more in depth information on the brainstem dysfunction hypothesis for long-COVID! - [What’s the Relationship Between Chronic Fatigue, Brain Fog, and POTS?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/whats-the-relationship-between-chronic-fatigue-brain-fog-and-pots/): - [How Can Diaphragmatic Breathing Improve Your Health?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/how-can-diaphragmatic-breathing-improve-your-health/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the importance of diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing is essential to life, and we do it without thinking about it; however, many people have dysfunctional breathing mechanisms that predispose or perpetuate health problems. Dysfunctional breathing–breathing fast, shallow, and into one’s chest–develops over time and becomes a habit that is difficult to break. On the other hand, proper diaphragmatic breathing is slow and controlled and using the diaphragm to breathe into one’s belly. This helps to balance the autonomic nervous system and can play a role in the respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal system. It has been shown to improve the health of those with COPD, heart disease, asthma, cancer, and more. Check out the video for more in depth information on diaphragmatic breathing and its benefits for your health! - [Are Ketones the Best Fuel Source for the Brain?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/are-ketones-the-best-fuel-source-for-the-brain/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the beneficial effects of ketones for the brain. The adult brain weighs 2% of the entire body but uses around 20% of the total energy! The main energy source is glucose under normal conditions. On the other hand, ketones are an alternative fuel source for the brain and body. The body can use glucose from sugar and carbs and fatty acids from fats, but the brain relies on glucose and ketones when available. Ketones are only made by the liver in times of fasting, starvation, or glucose restriction. When made they enter and supply the brain with constant energy that is more efficient than glucose. Additionally, ketones can be taken in the form of supplements like coconut or medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oils, ketone salts, and ketone esters. All forms can promote a state of ketosis, which can improve functioning in neurological disorders and neurodegeneration. Check out the video for more in depth information on the benefits that ketones have on the brain! - [Can Acid Reflux Medications (PPIs) Cause Dementia?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/can-acid-reflux-medications-ppis-cause-dementia/): - [How Does the Vagus Nerve Improve Memory Consolidation During Sleep?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/how-does-the-vagus-nerve-improve-memory-consolidation-during-sleep/): - [Concussion Standard of Care](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/concussion-standard-of-care/): - [What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/what-is-trigeminal-neuralgia/): On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about trigeminal neuralgia diagnosis and treatment options. Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition affecting the trigeminal nerve in the face. The patient feels paroxysmal pain in the face in the distribution of the nerve that is normally produced by touching of the face. This could be caused by putting on makeup, cold windy air, or even a face mask. The trigeminal nerve has three divisions that distribute the upper, middle, and lower portions of the face, and the most commonly affected divisions are the middle (2nd) and lower (3rd). Direct compression to the nerve from an artery or tumor could be the cause, or other problems within the brain could be causing the pain including multiple sclerosis or other inflammatory conditions. Most treatment options are medications or surgery that come with side effects. Tourette syndrome is a hyperkinetic movement disorder meaning that there is excessive movement and activity in the individual. These are normally in the form of motor tics (like facial expressions or blinking) or vocal tics (loud sounds/words, even profanities). The disorder starts early in life between the ages of 4-6, but only a third of the individuals maintain the disorder in adulthood. It is thought to arise from maldevelopment of the brain, especially how the cortex communicates with deeper structures. This faulty loop is called the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit. Dysfunction in the form of over- or under-activation of areas can lead to the tic generation and expression. Check out the video for more in depth information on Tourette syndrome and how we treat it! - [Fire Up Your Brain!](https://neurologicwellnessinstitute.com/fire-up-your-brain/): Born with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, Trent experienced pain and stiffness every day from the time he was a child.
