Ask Dr. Nick

On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about how brain-based neurorehabilitation and neurofeedback play a role in ADHD treatment. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder due to a delay in proper brain connections.

These brain areas involve the motor, cognitive, and emotional systems in the brain that all mirror each other. Therefore, poor development in the motor system can lead to dysfunction in the cognitive and emotional systems and vice versa. Also, there is evidence that the areas involved in the default mode network (DMN) are not turned off when necessary for focus and attention.

Brain-based rehab stimulates these circuits and brain regions through movements, vestibular exercises, and pain-free electrical stimulation. At the same time, neurofeedback is specific to brain regions and brain waves based on a quantified electroencephalogram (QEEG). This therapy uses positive reinforcement to properly improve these brain areas. Both of these treatment options are non-invasive and long lasting ways to improve symptoms of ADHD without side effects.
