What is a Functional Neurological Disorder
Functional neurological disorders (FND) are common, accounting for 16% of all referrals to general neurology clinics but have historically been rather neglected in research and clinical service development. FND can impact people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, although it is more commonly diagnosed in women and adolescents.
The exact physiological mechanisms underlying FND are not fully understood. FND is characterized by a disruption in the normal functioning of the nervous system, often manifesting as various neurological symptoms. These symptoms can include motor symptoms (such as weakness, tremors, dystonia, or paralysis), sensory symptoms (such as numbness or altered sensations), and non-epileptic seizures.
The pathology is thought to involve an alteration in the way the brain processes and integrates sensory and motor information. Advances in neuroimaging have provided new insights into changes in brain activity, functional connectivity and brain structure in FND.
