Ask Dr. Nick

On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the effects of dehydration and balance problems. Balance is governed by three main systems: vestibular (inner ear), proprioception (muscles and joints), and vision. The vestibular component is very sensitive to small head movements that cause movement of fluid within canals. This fluid should be kept stable in terms of volume, pressure, and specific gravity so that the sensory receptor can better sense changes in head position. When dehydration occurs after exercise, there are worse balance scores specifically when the vestibular system is tested, according to the study. It is proposed that the dehydration causes the fluid in the inner ear to change temporarily. Check out the video for more in depth information on how dehydration can cause dizziness and balance problems!
