Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about another amazing benefit of physical exercise for brain health. Chronic neuroinflammation is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases, but can also be present in post-concussion problems. Accompanying neuroinflammation is uncontrolled microglial cell activation, which are important cells in the brain. Under normal conditions, the microglia will help improve neuroplasticity and remove waste; however, when inflamed, the microglia contribute to the damage by promoting more inflammation and cellular death. Physical exercise has been shown to decrease neuroinflammation and microglial activation in a variety of ways in both pre-clinical models and humans. Check out the video for more in depth information on the ways that physical exercise can decrease inflammation!
