Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the benefits of raw honey in preventing cavities in teeth. Dental cavities (caries) form from an overgrowth of specific bacteria on the teeth that coalesce to form biofilms. These biofilms protect the bacteria and allow them to dig holes in the outer covering of the tooth to create cavities. Honey has been used in traditional cultures in wound management and is accepted to help wound healing today because of its antibacterial and antibiofilm effects. Honey–as long as it is high quality, raw, and unprocessed–has more components than sugar, which creates these antimicrobial effects. There are also other benefits of honey for the oral microbiome. Check out the video for more in depth information on why raw honey can decrease cavities and improve dental health!
