Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about treating attention and cognitive issues that are persistent after concussions. Cognitive problems like attention, focus, brain fog, and slowed processing are all very common complaints following concussions. These are symptoms affecting the frontal lobe, which is a common area compromised in head injuries. Aside from proper nutrition, exercise, and cognitive apps, Interactive Metronome (IM) therapy is a great way to rehabilitate the frontal lobe. It uses visual and auditory input with proprioceptive (muscle/joint) control to activate the main coordinating part of the brain. Then, this cerebellum helps to drive activation of the frontal lobes. The study discussed uses IM therapy with blast-injury victims who have persistent cognitive complaints. Check out the video for more in depth information on how IM therapy can improve attention and cognitive issues following concussion!
