Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the benefits of taking omega-3 fish oil before and after a concussion. The predominant omega-3s in the body are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), but DHA is the most prevalent in the brain. These are only found in animal products with the greatest source coming from seafood like sardines, mackerel, anchovies, and salmon. Fish oil has been shown to have amazing benefits for the body, including the brain, due to its anti-inflammatory effects; however, a concussion causes a unique pathology in the brain that is more than just inflammation. For this reason, omega-3s are highly recommended for those at risk for concussion due to sports or occupation and just following a concussion. Check out the video for more in depth information on how omega-3s actually help the brain during and after a concussion!
