Symptoms
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that leads to physical, cognitive, and emotional dysfunction.
Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease. However, there are a growing number of therapies which are effective in reducing symptoms, enhancing function, and improving quality of life.
No two cases of Parkinson’s disease are the same and there is no specific test to diagnose Parkinson’s disease.
There are many known possible causes to Parkinson’s disease such as genetics and a wide range of environmental triggers.
Due to these factors, each patient suspected of having Parkinson’s disease must undergo an examination by a trained specialist to be accurately diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time.
Common symptoms include: shaking/tremor of the body, stiffness/rigidity of the body, slowness of movement, balance/walking dysfunction, coordination and fine motor control problems, body pains, memory and executive function difficulties, depression and/or anxiety, sleep disorders, constipation, difficulty swallowing and speaking, trouble smelling, and sexual dysfunction.
