Symptoms
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nervous system and leads to physical, cognitive, and emotional changes. It develops when brain cells that produce dopamine begin to break down. Dopamine helps coordinate movement, so its decline results in motor and non-motor challenges.
While the exact cause of Parkinson’s disease isn’t always clear, contributing factors may include genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. Because Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder that unfolds over time, early intervention can be essential. Common signs include tremors, stiffness, or changes in facial expression and gait.
Parkinson’s is not curable, but it is manageable. With the right tools, including targeted brain-based therapies and lifestyle changes, you can have functional improvements and regain a sense of control.
Due to these factors, each patient suspected of having Parkinson’s disease must undergo an examination by a trained specialist to be accurately diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s Symptoms
Common Motor Symptoms:
- Tremor or shaking, especially in the hands
- Muscle rigidity and stiffness
- Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
- Impaired balance and coordination
Non-Motor Symptoms:
- Depression and anxiety
- Constipation and digestive issues
- Sleep disturbances
- Cognitive changes, including memory issues and brain fog
- Speech and swallowing difficulties
Parkinson’s
Evaluation
- Comprehensive neurological examinationCognitive assessments
- Balance and gait analysis
- Review of lifestyle, history, and environmental triggers
This in-depth process allows our functional neurologists to pinpoint subtle disruptions in brain function and nervous system communication. No two clients present the same, so every plan begins with highly personalized data.
Parkinson’s
Treatment
After our 3-hour initial evaluation, our doctors are able to combine specific applications of neurological rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation, balance/gait rehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, neurofeedback, and nutritional/lifestyle advice to personalize each client’s treatment in order to maximize the outcomes.
Our brain-based rehab protocols rely on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change and adapt, to help retrain lost functions and restore mobility, balance, and clarity. Treatments are customized for each client and may include visual tracking exercises, vestibular retraining, and task-specific cognitive drills.
Unlike standard care, which often relies solely on medications or surgery, our model of care integrates functional neurology and functional medicine to target the root causes of each neurological disorder. By supporting the brain and body holistically, clients often report improved gait, reduced stiffness, sharper focus, and better quality of life.

Empowering Parkinson’s Clients
We believe that living with a neurological condition doesn’t mean settling for less. Our approach to care empowers you to take charge of your life again. We guide clients and families through the complexities of neurological disease and functional symptoms, helping them understand the nervous system, set achievable goals, and celebrate every step forward.
Empowerment begins with education and community. At NWI, we spend time helping clients and caregivers understand how functional movement disorders and other neurological conditions affect day-to-day life. This insight allows them to participate actively in therapy and to advocate confidently for their health.
We also emphasize realistic outcomes because hope thrives best when it’s paired with clarity. Our clients learn what progress might look like in the short and long term, setting achievable goals based on their diagnosis, needs, and treatment response.
Many clients experience improvements in balance, energy, speech, and even emotional regulation. With help from our functional neurologists, they learn to rebuild confidence and re-engage in meaningful activities. Our focus is not just on symptom relief but on restoring quality of life.
Through functional neurology, brain function can improve, one small win at a time. Clients learn to measure progress in ways that matter to them: walking more steadily, speaking more clearly, or sleeping more soundly. These moments, big and small, are celebrated across our centers.
At The Neurologic Wellness Institute, we remind every client: You are more than a diagnosis. Whether you’re managing Parkinson’s or another movement disorder, we’ll help you find a pathway forward. With consistent support, expert care, and a strong therapeutic alliance, we’re here to help you redefine what’s possible.
