Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about two areas that everyone can do on their own to improve concussion recovery. There has been a lot of research on both exercise and dietary supplementation with improving outcomes following a concussion. First, aerobic exercise like walking or riding a bike can greatly benefit the brain. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps remove waste and inflammation. This also helps get nutrients to the recovering brain. Next, specific supplements can help promote healing. Creatine can be used as energy to help the brain cells rebuild. Fish oil can decrease inflammation but also act as building blocks for brain cells. Vitamin D may help regulate the immune system to hasten recovery and prevent autoimmunity.
