Ask Dr. Nick

On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about Alzheimer’s disease and some ways to decrease risk. Alzheimer’s disease affects the hippocampus, which is the brain area that converts short to long-term memory. This causes a slow regression of decreased memory processing, consolidation, and retrieval. There are many factors involved like genetics, environment, and behavior. The article explains how environmental and behavioral factors can be optimized, based on evolutionary advantages, to decrease risk. These include physical activity, nutrient-rich diet, intermittent fasting, and adequate sleep that have been natural to human history. Social life has been important as well, so family bonding, new challenges, and a purpose in life can help decrease risk. These can all improve brain cell rejuvenation and biogenesis of new cells in the hippocampus. Check out the video for more in depth information on the steps to take to decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s disease!
