Ask Dr. Nick
On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the importance of choline intake for all ages. Choline was originally classified as a B vitamin, but then it was found that we make small amounts of choline in the body. However, it is noted that we do not make enough for daily requirements, so it is considered an essential nutrient.
Choline is essential for turning on and off genes related to learning and memory, for making acetylcholine that is used as signals between brain cells, and for making phophotidylcholine that makes up cell membranes. For this reason, it is important for babies to get it pre- and postnatally for proper brain development. It can help to prevent cognitive decline in the elderly, those with and without symptoms or diagnoses of early Alzheimer’s disease. Check out the video for more in depth information on the benefits of choline and how to incorporate it into your diet!
